Video conferences supplement telephone calls with video media, usually camera recordings and screen content (desktop sharing) of participants. As a result, meetings become more lively and employees are more engaged than during conference calls. If the video is activated during a call, the feel and etiquette of the meeting changes. Participants can see and be seen and are therefore less likely to switch off or multitask. Instead, they are forced to make virtual eye contact. The feeling of distance is thus removed and closer (customer) relationships can be maintained.

In classrooms, one or more lecturers speak in front of a local audience. At the same time, there is a feed into the video conferencing world. Handheld, throw or ceiling microphones can be installed to enable participants to ask questions. Instructors will also be equipped with headsets to enable the best possible audio capture.

Audience rooms are usually suitable for one or more lecturers in front of a local audience. At the same time, the meeting is fed into the installed video conferencing system. Headsets and handheld microphones, which are intended for inquiries from the audience, are used here. As a result, background noises from the audience are not recorded.

This increases your flexibility and gives you a wide range of applications. Despite its high level of complexity, video conferencing technology in multifunctional rooms is very user-friendly.

Hard codec vs. cloud solutions

Hardware codecs have been used as standards-based (H.323 protocol and now SIP) endpoints for video calls for many years. These “hard codecs” have always been fairly expensive systems that rely on very expensive back-end infrastructure servers. These systems function stably and reliably, but in addition to the high purchase costs, they also require a high level of maintenance.

A soft client or cloud solution is a hardware-independent software solution that runs on user devices (notebooks/tablets) or room PCs/tablets (Microsoft Windows or MAC OS) and connects to the back-end infrastructure either via a cloud service or with its own servers (on-premise). Examples of such applications include Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business, Cisco WebEx, Google Hangouts, Zoom, etc.
